Freedom of Information Act 2000 – Request for Information

We are pleased to respond to your request for information and our response is set out below:

Request

I was hoping that you could provide me with information on local cancer strategies across Sheffield in particular, if you have the information, in the wards of Ecclesall and Park & Arbourthorne.

Also, any information on local strategies to promote a healthy lifestyle would be really useful.

Response

Thank you for your enquiry.  We have a number of Sheffield cancer initiatives we would like to tell you about.

Living With and Beyond Cancer:  We are working within the Living With and Beyond Cancer (LWABC) project to make service improvements through implementing personalised care interventions.  The aim is to deliver a better experience for people affected by cancer. The project brings all Sheffield partners together to work collaboratively and is part of a wider LWABC programme across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw which is funded by Macmillan and sits within the system wide Cancer Alliance.

Drop-in Advice & Support The Moor Market:  The CCG is pleased to continue to commission the cancer information hub which operates within the Moor Market and provides a friendly face with information about cancer including prevention and sign-posting to support services.  The hub is run by the Cavendish Cancer Care, more information is available here:

https://cavcare.org.uk/news/cancer-information-hub-re-opening-in-the-moor-market/

Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE):  This project is working with the local VCSE organisations which deliver city wide cancer support services to support improved uptake and access to health and wellbeing information and support, particularly for people from Black, Asian, minority ethnic  (BAME) communities and those living is areas of deprivation or in isolation, to address health inequalities. The project has undertaken extensive public engagement to drive forward this work and a new forum for people affected by cancer has been formed, to be known as Sheffield Cancer Voices, moving forward.

Cancer Care Reviews:  We are also working with Primary Care to support their delivery of Cancer Care Reviews to their patients and within Sheffield Teaching Hospital (STH) to ensure all people affected by breast, colorectal or prostate cancers have access to holistic needs assessments and end of treatment summaries. This also involves supporting the hospital in their development and implementation of personalised stratified follow-up, to ensure patients receive care and support closer to home, where appropriate.

Cancer Vague Symptoms:  The Cancer Team in Sheffield works closely with local hospitals and The Cancer Alliance to support improvements to cancer pathways for patients and we are currently working on implementing a new pathway for patients presenting with vague symptoms. On a system wide level, we are contributing to the work of the Cancer Alliance in developing Rapid Diagnosis Centres.

Cancer Screening:  We also support the national cancer screening and early diagnosis work of Public Health England and we are currently seeking to undertake a local pilot in the Manor area to support the uptake of screening.

Useful information:

Cancer:  Much of our cancer work happens on a more regional footprint and is led by the South Yorkshire and Basset Law Cancer Alliance.  They have a useful website with information and contact details here: https://canceralliancesyb.co.uk/

In regard to promotion of healthy lifestyles local GPs have access to various local groups they are able to sign-post their patients to.  However, the majority of health improvement work is undertake by the local City Council and you may be interested in the local collaborative work we are doing via the Health and Wellbeing Board https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/home/public-health/health-wellbeing-board
